Role, Responsibilities, and Qualifications
Position Overview
A Transfer Station Equipment Operator is responsible for safely and efficiently handling the flow of materials at a transfer station. This role involves operating heavy machinery to move, load, and manage waste materials while maintaining strict safety and operational standards. Operators play a key role in ensuring that waste is handled correctly, equipment is maintained, and the worksite remains safe and productive.
This position requires strong technical skills, physical stamina, and attention to detail. Operators work in varying weather conditions, communicate regularly with coworkers and supervisors, and must stay alert to always ensure both safety and productivity.
Key Responsibilities
- Operating heavy machinery such as loaders, backhoes, material handlers, yard goats, and forklifts to move materials, and other objects.
- Conducting routine inspections and basic maintenance of equipment to ensure safe operation.
- Adhering to safety protocols and regulations to protect oneself and others on the worksite.
- Communicating with supervisors, crew members, and other trades to coordinate operations.
- Reporting any malfunctions or hazards to appropriate personnel immediately.
Common Types of Equipment Operated
- Material Handler: For loading trailers of wet putrescible waste to correct weight for legal hauling.
- Loaders: For pushing material as well as top loading trailers.
- Yard Goats: For transporting full and empty trailers in the yard.
Required Skills & Qualifications
- High school diploma or equivalent (some employers may require additional technical training).
- Basic math skills for calculating trailer weights.
- On-the-job training or completion of an apprenticeship program.
- Mechanical aptitude and understanding of machine operation and maintenance.
- Physical strength, stamina, and good hand-eye coordination.
- Attention to detail and strong spatial awareness.
- Knowledge of occupational health and safety regulations.
- Possession of relevant certifications or licenses, such as a Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) or equipment-specific certifications.
